Duʿāʾ for When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

Several duʿāʾ preserved from the Prophet ﷺ were made specifically in moments of real distress and overwhelm, not composed as generic reassurance — worth knowing by name for exactly the moments they were meant for.

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

There is no god but You, glory be to You, I have indeed been of the wrongdoers.

— The duʿāʾ of Yūnus (Jonah), in the belly of the whale

Described as a duʿāʾ that, if made by any distressed believer, is answered — made in what was arguably the most physically overwhelming circumstance described in the Qur'an, which is exactly why it's held up as a model for lesser moments of distress too.

The Prophet's own duʿāʾ under pressure

'Ḥasbunallāhu wa niʿmal-wakīl' — Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs — said by the believers facing an army gathered against them (3:173), a duʿāʾ for the moment a situation genuinely feels bigger than your ability to handle it.

A practical use

Keeping two or three of these memorised, rather than needing to search for them in the moment itself, means they're available exactly when overwhelm hits and thinking clearly is hardest — which is the whole point of memorising duʿāʾ rather than only reading them.
