A Letter to Your Future Self Before Having a Baby

The last weeks before a baby arrives are unlike almost any other stretch of life — equal parts terrified and ready, still able to imagine parenthood rather than living inside it. Once the baby comes, that specific mix of feeling disappears fast, replaced entirely by the reality itself. It's worth catching it in writing before it's gone.

What you're afraid of

Not being enough, not knowing what you're doing, losing yourself, the responsibility of another soul in your care — name the actual fear rather than a brave version of it. Every parent has had some form of this fear; very few wrote it down before it either came true or didn't.

What kind of parent you want to be

Before the daily reality of parenting shapes your habits by necessity rather than intention, write down what you actually want to be true — how you want to speak to them, what you want them to feel safe asking you, what you refuse to let yourself become under pressure and exhaustion.

A duʿāʾ for them, before they can hear it

Whatever you're asking Allah for on their behalf right now — protection, guidance, a good end — write it down plainly. One day, sealed and returned, this becomes something you can actually show them: proof that you were making duʿāʾ for them before they could even hear you.
