A Letter to Your Future Self Before Retirement

Retirement gets talked about mostly in financial terms — pensions, savings, when it's affordable — and far less as the identity shift it actually is, after decades of a role that structured your days and told you, implicitly, who you were. A letter written in the weeks before is a way of naming what you actually want the next chapter to be, before the shift happens and daily life reshapes the answer for you.

What you're afraid retirement will take from you

Purpose, structure, a sense of being needed — name the actual fear rather than the socially acceptable version ('I'll finally relax'). Most people who struggle in retirement struggle with exactly this, and rarely admitted it beforehand.

What you want more of, now that time is actually available

More time in the Qur'an, more time with grandchildren, more time at the masjid, a duʿāʾ you never had space for during working years — retirement is one of the few points where time genuinely opens up. Naming what you want to fill it with now, before habits harden around whatever fills it by default, matters.

A letter sealed today, addressed to yourself a year into retirement, is a real way to check whether the free time went toward what you actually intended.
