A Letter to Your Future Self Before Starting University
The week before university starts carries a specific mix of excitement and dread that mostly evaporates within the first fortnight of term, replaced by the actual texture of lectures, deadlines, and a new city. It's worth writing that pre-arrival version of yourself down before it's gone for good.
What you're hoping for
Not just the degree — the actual person you're hoping to become by graduation. More independent, more disciplined in prayer without family checking in, more confident, finally out from under a label you've been trying to shed for years. Say it plainly.
What you're afraid of
Losing your deen in an environment that doesn't protect it the way home did. Not finding community. Being the only visibly Muslim person in a room. Falling behind academically. Whatever it is, name it honestly rather than performing confidence you don't quite feel yet.
The habit worth protecting
Pick one thing — praying on time, finding a masjid in the first week, calling home every Friday — and write it down as a promise to the version of you who'll be tired, busy, and tempted to let it slide by week three. A letter sealed now, addressed to yourself at the end of first year, is a real way to check whether it held.
Write a letter tonight. Seal it to a date that means something.
