The Month of Rajab: Preparing Early for Ramaḍān
Rajab, one of the four sacred months, sits roughly two months before Ramaḍān and has long been treated by many Muslims as an early runway toward it — though it's worth being precise about what's actually established from the Sunnah here versus what's cultural practice, since a fair amount of Rajab-specific ritual circulated widely isn't well-supported.
What's actually well-grounded
Rajab being one of the four sacred months (alongside Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and Muḥarram) in which wrongdoing is especially discouraged is clearly established. The Prophet ﷺ made duʿāʾ upon entering Rajab asking for blessing in it and in Shaʿbān, and for reaching Ramaḍān — a real, simple duʿāʾ worth reviving specifically for this purpose.
What to actually do with it
Rather than inventing specific Rajab rituals, use the two-month runway practically: start adjusting sleep and habits gradually rather than switching everything on the first night of Ramaḍān. Begin whatever Qur'an plan you intend to run through the month, at a smaller scale, so it's already a habit by the time Ramaḍān starts rather than a fresh, fragile one.
Writing down, now, what you want Ramaḍān to actually look like this year — and sealing it to open on the first night of the month — gives your future self, tired by week two, something concrete to return to instead of the memory of a vague good intention made months earlier.
Write a letter tonight. Seal it to a date that means something.
