The Virtue of Fasting Mondays and Thursdays
Fasting Mondays and Thursdays was one of the most consistent practices of the Prophet ﷺ, and the reason he gave for it is specific and worth knowing: deeds are presented to Allah on those two days, and he loved for his deeds to be presented while he was fasting.
A rhythm, not a rule
Unlike Ramaḍān, this isn't obligatory, and missing a week isn't a failure — it's a rhythm to build toward, not a box to check. Starting with just one day a week, whichever is more realistic, and building from there tends to last longer than committing to both immediately and burning out within a month.
Practical tips
Pairing it with a lighter work day if possible. Preparing a proper suhoor-equivalent meal before starting the fast rather than skipping breakfast unplanned. Treating it as a small, repeatable act of worship rather than a health regimen — the reward is tied to the intention, not the discipline alone.
Tracking it loosely over a few months — how many Mondays and Thursdays actually got fasted versus intended — is a useful, low-effort way to see whether the habit is actually taking hold or just an idea you keep meaning to start.
