Amāna is a website and app for writing a letter to your future self. You write it tonight, choose the date it should come back — next Ramaḍān, the Day of ʿArafah, a birthday, a date only you understand — and it stays sealed until then. Not hidden behind a button you could tap early. Actually locked, at the database level, so that not even the people who built Amāna can read it before the date arrives.
The name comes from the Arabic amāna (أمانة), meaning a trust — something held faithfully on someone else’s behalf until it’s due back to them. That’s the whole idea: your letter is a trust we hold for you, and a trust only means something if the person holding it can’t break it.
Amāna is built around muḥāsabah — the Islamic practice of holding yourself to account, taking stock of who you are honestly before you’re asked to account for it elsewhere. A letter to your future self is one of the oldest, simplest ways to do that: write down where you actually are right now, seal it, and let a future date hold you to it.
Write a letter in the open, or answer a set of guided prompts if a blank page feels like too much. Seal it to a Hijri date, a Gregorian one, or one that’s just yours. Add a voice note if you want your own voice waiting for you too. Have it delivered by email, or — for the letters that deserve it — printed, sealed, and posted to arrive on paper.
